Terms of Use

These terms govern the use of CostDivider. By creating an account, or by using a link that shows group data without a login, you agree to them.

Last updated: 2 September 2026.

1. Provider and subject matter

The provider is Pierre Di Marco, Im Flürchen 22, 54309 Newel, Germany (pierdm@gmail.com); full details are in the Imprint.

CostDivider is a tool that helps groups track and divide shared expenses. It is provided free of charge. There is no entitlement to its provision.

2. What this service is expressly not

CostDivider does not process payments. The app never receives money, never forwards any, and never initiates a payment. It does arithmetic on figures members enter themselves, and at most displays a payment detail its owner chose to record. It does not find out whether you actually paid; somebody records that by hand as a deposit.

The figures it computes are an aid to calculation — not an invoice, not a statement of account, and not evidence of a debt. Who owes what is settled between the people involved, not by this application. Nothing here is financial, tax, accounting or legal advice — see the Disclaimer.

3. Your account

You must be at least 16 years old to hold an account. Use an email address that is yours and that you can read: confirming the account depends on it, and it is how an invitation finds you.

One address belongs to exactly one account. Keep your credentials to yourself; you are responsible for what happens through your account. If you suspect somebody else has access, write to us.

You can have your account deleted at any time — just write to pierdm@gmail.com. What deletion does exactly, and what stays with the groups for good reasons, is set out in section 6 of the Privacy Policy.

4. Your content

What you enter — group and expense names, posts on a message board, direct messages — remains yours. We claim no rights in it beyond what running the service requires: storing it, displaying it, and making it available to the other members of the same group.

You confirm that you hold the rights needed to do so, and that your content infringes nobody else's rights and breaks no applicable law.

5. What is not allowed here

This application is for people dividing shared costs. In particular, do not:

  • post unlawful, abusive, threatening or harassing content, or content encouraging such behaviour;
  • enter other people's personal data without being entitled to — adding an email address to invite somebody is fine; keeping a group as an address book is not;
  • use invitations, the message board or direct messages for advertising or bulk messaging;
  • impersonate anyone, or register an account on an address that is not yours;
  • try to reach other people's data, circumvent access restrictions, guess access links, or load the service automatically beyond ordinary use;
  • use the application in a way that impairs its operation or other people's use of it.

The same applies to the programming interface. API keys are personal; do not pass them on, and revoke a key that has gone astray from within your account.

6. Links that work without a login

A group link and a personal link work for whoever holds them — that is their purpose, not a weakness. Passing one on is a decision about who may see the data behind it, and the responsibility for that decision is yours. Treat them like a key. What they disclose and how long they last is set out in section 4a of the Privacy Policy.

Whoever moderates a group decides its membership and its group link. Do not invite somebody who is not expecting it, and switch the group link off once it is no longer needed.

7. Availability, suspension and termination

The service is provided without any assurance of a particular level of availability. Maintenance, faults and changes to what it does are all possible. We may discontinue the service in whole or in part; where that is foreseeable, we will announce it with reasonable notice so you can save your data.

Where content or conduct breaches section 5 or applicable law, we may remove the content in question and suspend or delete the account in question. As a rule we will point it out first and give you an opportunity to put it right; for serious or unlawful breaches, and where a warning would make the harm worse, we may not. We will tell the person affected at their account's address and give the reason. You may object at pierdm@gmail.com; we will review the objection and reply to it.

You may stop using the service at any time by asking for your account to be deleted (section 3). There is no notice period.

8. Liability

The Disclaimer applies and forms part of these terms. It sets out in particular what remains expressly unaffected: liability for damages arising from injury to life, body or health, liability under the German Product Liability Act, liability for intent and gross negligence, and liability for breach of essential contractual duties.

9. Data protection

Which personal data is processed, for what purpose and on what legal basis is set out in the Privacy Policy. It is information rather than part of these terms — your rights under the GDPR exist independently of anything agreed here.

10. Changes, governing law

We may change these terms, for instance when what the app does or the legal position changes. We will tell account holders about material changes in advance at their account's address. If you do not agree to a change, you can have your account deleted; the version posted on this page is the one currently in effect.

German law applies. If you are a consumer habitually resident in another country, the mandatory consumer protection rules of that country remain unaffected, and nothing here agrees a place of jurisdiction to your disadvantage.

Should any provision of these terms be invalid, the remainder stays in force.

These terms of use exist in German and English. The German version is the authoritative one.
